We Bought a STUCK 500ci Swapped 1962 Cadillac for CHEAP! | Will it Run?

Classic Cadillacs are awesome! Usually these classic American luxury cars are too expensive to buy and drive, but we picked this 2 door 500ci Cadillac for $3,000! The bad news is that the engine is stuck, it's been sitting since 2002, and it has holy floorboards. In today's episode, we rescue it from its grave, bring it back to the C&C HQ, and try to make it run!

Thanks for Watching!

You just don't find many 1962 Coupes out there anymore, they have a lot of value, good thing is it looks like that 500 engine was rebuilt but someone restoring it let it sit way to long so it locked up, they should have pumped oil in each cylinder, or do what the GM manual says dump oil down the carburetor while engine is running then shut it off it wont seize up then, in 1973 that was taken out of the GM manual damn crazy environmentalists and Government.

That engine is so clean I'm betting they left water in the block and froze on a fresh rebuild. A buddy of mine bought a 1965 Dodge Dart off a guy that rebuilt the 318 engine in it. They put water in it because they had no antifreeze and were excited to run it. Unfortunately for them, they let it set out overnight without draining the water and had the first hard freeze of the season. That engine was done with just barely even an hour on it! Lots of good parts on that engine. This would be one to just have fun with and trick it out, put in an LS.

I seem to recall the drag racers used to fill the bottom of their block's cooling passages with some kind of cement or ceramic to add strength to the block and cylinder walls. Since your crack is near the bottom maybe that could do double duty to seal off your crack also. That part of the cooling really isn't that important anyway as most of the heat is generated at the top of the cylinders and the head. I'd still drill some maybe 5/16 holes just past the ends of the crack just to make sure it doesn't keep going and plug the holes with something so whatever you pour in there doesn't just come dribbling out. Once whatever you put in there hardens up it should be all sealed and good to go.

I read an old magazine article about fixing cracked blocks with what they called a cold weld I think. Basically you drill out and install pipe plugs in the block crack and keep overlapping the plugs til the crack is gone. May worth trying. Or do it the cheap way and buy some magic potion in the bottle, the stuff in the neon green plastic bottle works good for blown head gasket, first hand experience.

  85. Demo

    19 ditë më parë

I think you should try to keep that block, just remember when attempting to weld that crack you should drill a hole in each end of it or else it will crack farther due to the heat.

For everyone saying to "weld" the block, it's cast-iron, you cannot weld a cast-iron engine block. You can however do something called cold metal stiching, but good luck finding anyone with the experience to do it. You can braze it but not weld on a cast block. Also, the comments of just get another block........... they don't exactly have a large stock of 500 blocks sitting around and the majority have been melted down 40 years ago. I would braze it, use some jb weld if there are any small imperfections and then sand it and send it. Best case is this will be a rat rod esk type ride. Even the completely restored Cadillacs from this time don't go for more than 20-30k. There would be that in body and paint alone. Just get it to a "surviver" condition and call it a day

Also, to the ones that are like "yes you can weld cast-iron ". Obviously cast can be welded but it's not even close to being practical on an engine block that's not a caterpillar diesel that's 8 feet long. Even then the only thing getting welded is something like an accessory mount. Before you make that comment, show me a single example of a gasoline engine that's cast, be welded successfully....... I will wait.

We had a 62 Caddy. Parents bought it in 65 and it had a 390 which was plenty of power since it had a 4 barrel that could suck gas . Ours was turquoise and was a 4 door. Loved that car. Unfortunately the heater core started leaking and my dad put water in it. A cold snap hit and the block cracked. Dad traded it in for another car in 74 for $50 . I think they only paid $3k for it in 65. That electric eye only dimmed the highbeams if they were already on. The highbeams switch should be on the floor to the left of the brake pedal. Cadillac came out with the highbeam electric eye either in 55 or 58.
